On view from April 1–29, 2016 at 1727 N. Charles Street—the former Everyman Theater black box space--Room is an exhibition that employs immersive installation art to heighten the psychological effects of architectural space. For this show, MICA’s Exhibition Development Seminar (EDS) commissioned Rhode Island-based design collective Pneuhaus to create a new body of work investigating the relationships people form with their surroundings. Through two large inflatable sculptures, smaller three–dimensional studies, and process–based drawings, the exhibition opens opportunities to discuss the significance of space in its purest forms--geometry and perspective; lines, planes, and curves. The audience is invited to examine their responses to these blank perplexing chambers and compare them to encounters with their own domestic spaces, often cluttered by objects and subjective associations.
The show also includes pieces created by students in MICA faculty member Olivia Robinson’s Soft Sculpture and Inflatables course in an intensive weekend-long workshop led by Pneuhaus. These students responded intuitively to Pneuhaus’ minimalist geometric motifs—deforming them with ropes and cords, or complicating them with performance elements.
Together, all of these artworks question traditional notions of interior and exterior space where our emotive responses to an environment are not directly stemmed from only physical elements, but also derive from personal preconceived ideas and thoughts.
